Basic knowledge of plastics

First, the definition of plastic

The plastic is a polymer organic material which is mainly composed of a resin and is shaped into a certain shape under a certain temperature and pressure, and can maintain a predetermined shape at a normal temperature.
Resin refers to an organic polymer which usually has a range of conversion or melting when heated, and which is fluid by external force during conversion. It is a solid or semi-solid or liquid organic polymer at normal temperature. It is the most basic and most important component of plastics. Broadly speaking, any polymer that is a basic material for plastics in the plastics industry can be referred to as a resin.

Second, the classification of plastics

There is currently no exact classification of plastics, which are generally classified as follows:

1. According to the physical and chemical properties of plastics

Thermoplastic: Reheats softened and cooled hardened plastics over a specified temperature range. Such as polyethylene plastic, polyvinyl chloride plastic.

Thermoset plastic: A plastic that cures to infusible materials due to heat or other conditions. Such as phenolic plastics, epoxy plastics, etc.

2. Select by plastic

General Plastics: - Generally refers to plastics with large output, wide application, good formability and low cost. Such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride and so on.

Engineering plastics: - Generally refers to the ability to withstand a certain external force, and has good mechanical properties and dimensional stability, can maintain its excellent performance at high and low temperatures, can be used as engineering structural parts of plastic. Such as ABS, nylon, polyfluorene and so on.

Special plastics: - Generally refers to plastics with special functions (such as heat resistance, self-lubrication, etc.) for special requirements. Such as fluoroplastics, silicones, etc.

3. According to plastic molding method

Molded plastic: A resin mixture for molding. Such as general thermosetting plastics.

Laminated plastic: refers to a fiber fabric impregnated with resin, which can be laminated and thermocompressed to form a monolithic material.

Injection, Extrusion, and Blow Molding: - Generally refers to a resin mixing group that melts, flows, and hardens rapidly in a mold at the barrel temperature. Such as general thermoplastics.

Cast plastic: A liquid resin mixture that can be poured into a mold to harden into a shaped product without pressure or a slight pressure. Such as MC nylon.

Reaction injection molding plastic: generally refers to liquid raw materials, which are injected into the cavity by pressure, and reacted and solidified to obtain a finished product. Such as polyurethane.

4. According to plastic semi-products and products

Molding powder: Also known as plastic powder, it is mainly obtained by mixing, pressing and pulverizing a thermosetting resin (such as phenolic) and a filler. Such as phenolic plastic powder.

Reinforced plastic: A type of plastic with reinforcing materials and some mechanical properties that are significantly higher than the original resin.

Foam: A plastic with numerous micropores in its entirety.

Film: Generally refers to a flat and soft plastic product with a thickness of less than 0.25 mm.

In addition, engineering plastics, reinforced plastics and foams have different categories, as shown in the table below:

Classification of engineering plastics

Category polymer

General engineering plastics nylon, polyoxymethylene, polycarbonate, modified polyphenylene ether, thermoplastic polyester, ultra high molecular weight polyethylene, methylpentene polymer, vinyl alcohol copolymer, etc.

Special engineering plastics non-crosslinked polybenzazole, polyether oxime, polyphenylene sulfide, polyarylate, polyimide, polyetheretherketone, fluororesin, etc.

Crosslinked polyaminobismaleamide, polytriazine, crosslinked polyimide, heat resistant epoxy resin, etc.

Classification of reinforced plastics

According to the shape of the reinforcing material, the granular reinforcing plastic such as calcium plastic plastic fiber reinforced plastic such as glass fiber or glass cloth reinforced plastic sheet reinforced plastic such as mica reinforced plastic

According to the material of the reinforcing material, the cloth base, asbestos reinforced plastic such as rag reinforced plastic inorganic mineral filled plastic such as quartz, mica filled plastic glass fiber reinforced plastic such as prepreg, SMC, BMC and other special fiber reinforced plastics such as carbon fiber, Kevlar Fiber reinforced plastic metal fiber reinforced plastic such as steel reinforced plastic
