US$30 million will be used to expand the “natural silk” coating

A natural chemical company based in Massachusetts, USA, has completed a $30 million investment to expand its liquid silk products to replace synthetic processing chemicals.

Silk has developed a non-toxic "natural silk" product from the cocoon non-based modified polymer yarn produced at the Boston plant. The natural silk is produced using an organic and resilient method without petroleum chemical contamination.

The company said the funds will enable it to launch "safe chemicals" - biodegradable, biocompatible alternatives to petrochemicals, and will introduce the fashion and textile industries to expand production to commercial scale.

In fact, all textiles used to make garments are coated with synthetic chemicals to achieve features such as: feel, color setting, moisture wicking and deodorization. Since most of these chemicals come from fossil fuels, they can contribute to extreme weather and will exist in the environment for several generations.

The company said: "The silk entered the apparel market, which means that the company has the potential to block the chemical industry from entering the market through its safe, sustainable and high-performance alternatives."

Greg Altman, co-founder and chief executive, said: "Over the years, consumers have been accustomed to eating stomach foods; we are now at the door of a public health campaign, through what people wear. Clothes to ask about their impact on the body, and then guide the fashion industry to seek clean, non-toxic chemical solutions to protect the health and environment of customers."
